Care & maintenance

We’re constantly finding new ways to become more sustainable, so we only select products that are built to last. We recommend that you use your weeding hoe correctly to extend its lifespan.

Use it correctly:

  • Japanese steel is hard and sharp, and can be more brittle than some people are used to - it will chip if abused
  • Do not cut wire, metal, stone, plastic or any other hard material (even bamboo fibres and some very hard woods, especially knots and burrs, can damage steel edges)
  • Do not twist or apply uneven pressure
  • Cut diagonally across branches (not straight across) so you cut along the fibres
  • Pay attention to our maximum cut dimensions, and don’t overdo it (shears are not loppers)
  • Use the base of the blades, not the tips, for heavier cuts

Keep it clean

  • Remove leaf resin, rust and gunk with a Crean Mate and water
  • Dry, wipe over with Camellia oil and store in a dry place

For gardeners who believe you can never be too prepared for a quick prune.

For the gardener who likes to be prepared for anything, preferably with a pair of very good secateurs on their belt. Exclusive to Urban Grow, the Niwaki Quick-Draw Pruning Gift Set brings together four essentials for everyday pruning: Niwaki Mainichi Secateurs, a single leather holster, a 1000-grit sharpening stone and Camellia Oil.

The Mainichi Secateurs are made for everyday pruning, with a clean, direct action and a beautifully sharp Japanese carbon-steel blade. The leather holster keeps them close at hand, while the sharpening stone and Camellia Oil help keep them performing at their best.

In other words, everything you need to snip, sharpen, oil and repeat. It's a seriously good gift for anyone who takes their gardening - and their tools - seriously.

And it arrives beautifully presented in a recyclable Urban Grow gift box, ready to go straight under the tree.

Clean. Oil. Snip

Elevate your garden game: maintain like a master

Maintaining Niwaki tools is simple with the right care. After use, clean blades with Clean Mate, keep them lubricated with Camellia oil, and periodically sharpen using Niwaki sharpening stones. This routine ensures your shears, saws, and pruners stay precise, durable, and ready for effortless garden work season after season.

Garden Tree

Niwaki means garden tree. Not very exciting, but it implies far more than that. Japanese gardens are landscapes, microcosms of nature, and the trees are all shaped to fit into those landscapes - there’s an awful lot of artistry and cultural heritage in there too.

Niwaki Camellia Oil (7526051610817)

A word from the expert

A Christmas cut above the rest

If you're serious about pruning, you want your secateurs with you, not sitting in the shed while you wander around looking for them.

That's what I like about this set. You've got the Mainichi secateurs, a proper leather holster to keep them on your belt, and then everything you need to look after them. The sharpening stone keeps the edge where it should be, and a little Camellia Oil keeps everything clean and protected.

It's a simple idea, really: good secateurs, looked after properly, ready whenever you are.

And let's be honest, there's something rather satisfying about walking around the garden with a pair of Niwaki secateurs on your belt. You look like you know what you're doing, even if you're just deadheading the roses.
