Royal Sussex Garden Trug
Royal Sussex Garden Trug
The Royal Sussex Traditional Garden Trug is an exquisitely handcrafted gardening essential, designed to be loved and made to last. The 18" x 10" Garden Trug has a rectangular frame, deep basket and is ideal for carrying vegetables, fruit and tools.
Strong, durable and exceedingly versatile, these are trugs with a pedigree. Handmade in Sussex from sustainably coppiced English chestnut and recycled cricket bat willow, each trug has its own serial number and is guaranteed for five years. Simply put, trugs don't get any better than this.
Established in 1829, the company's founder Thomas Smith was the original manufacturer of the Sussex trug, the popular form which is now replicated across the globe. The difference however, is that of superior quality and sustainability. Thomas Smith trugs continue to be handcrafted using the traditional method and tools; it still takes an apprentice trugmaker three years to graduate!

Royal Sussex Trugs
Makers of the original Sussex Garden Trug since 1829
The original Sussex trug
Thomas Smith invented the Sussex Trug in 1829 and later personally sold them to Queen Victoria at The Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, 1851. The Smiths continued to make trugs until 1989 when the business was acquired by the present owners.
A traditional craft
Today, very little has changed with the manufacturing process, trugs are still made using hand tools and the traditional methods of shaving chestnut and steam bending wood. It still takes three years for a apprentice to learn the craft.
Sustainable materials
The chestnut rims and handles are coppiced from managed local woodlands, promoting flora and fauna diversity. The willow boards are made from recycled cricket bat clefts, supplied by a company who plants three trees for every one harvested.
Made to last
Unlike many cheap imports, a Thomas Smith trug is made to last, that's why each one comes with its own registration number, a 5 year guarantee and a free maintenance service for life. A true buy once, buy well product.
The Rolls Royce of Sussex trugs, a truly wonderful work of utilitarian art
Unbeatable Tradition
As soon as I held a Thomas Smith trug in my hands, it was one of those moments where you know categorically that you'll never entertain another. As a life-long professional gardener, I've used many trugs but none compare to the quality of a Thomas Smith trug. There's no surprise it takes so long to train to make these, because the end result is truly a work of art. You just can't beat traditional crafts.
