The Royal Sussex Traditional Garden Trug is an exquisitely handcrafted gardening essential, designed to be loved and made to last. The 18" x 10" Garden Trug has a rectangular frame, deep basket and is ideal for carrying vegetables, fruit and tools.

Strong, durable and exceedingly versatile, these are trugs with a pedigree. Handmade in Sussex from sustainably coppiced English chestnut and recycled cricket bat willow, each trug has its own serial number and is guaranteed for five years. Simply put, trugs don't get any better than this.

Established in 1829, the company's founder Thomas Smith was the original manufacturer of the Sussex trug, the popular form which is now replicated across the globe. The difference however, is that of superior quality and sustainability. Thomas Smith trugs continue to be handcrafted using the traditional method and tools; it still takes an apprentice trugmaker three years to graduate!

Care & maintenance

We’re constantly finding new ways to become more sustainable, so we only select products that are built to last. We recommend looking after your trug correctly to increase its lifespan.

  • Don't leave outside when not in use.
  • Don't leave wet garden rubbish inside it for extended periods of time.
  • If the trug gets wet, place it somewhere to dry out naturally.
  • Don't leave it in a greenhouse, as this will make the wood brittle.

You can use various surface applications if you wish to treat your Trug.

  • Danish or Linseed oil
  • Water or spirit-based wood preserver
  • Water or oil-based wood stain

The Rolls Royce of Sussex trugs, a truly wonderful work of utilitarian art

Unbeatable Tradition

As soon as I held a Thomas Smith trug in my hands, it was one of those moments where you know categorically that you'll never entertain another. As a life-long professional gardener, I've used many trugs but none compare to the quality of a Thomas Smith trug. There's no surprise it takes so long to train to make these, because the end result is truly a work of art. You just can't beat traditional crafts.
