Twine made from ethically sourced materials derived from sustainable crops

This iconic colourful Jute Twine Spool from the Nutscene® Heritage Range is still produced in the County of Angus, Scotland, on the original winding machines which were introduced circa 1922. The Twines are composed of biodegradable materials, sourced from sustainable resources for over 90 years.

This heritage twine is presented in a label reproduced from the Nutscene® archives circa 1940. The spool is 10.5cm high, composed of strong 3ply Twine and is 130m approximate in length. Colours will fade in strong sunlight. Uniquely, the balls of twine all dispense from the centre making it easier to work with and less likely to unravel.

A rich heritage

Nutscene® has been involved in the manufacturing and processing of jute twines and ancillary products for the gardener since 1922. The company patented the first “pull from centre spool” of garden twine, which has been copied by many but never equalled. Our name is derived from our world renowned green garden twine which, when tied around the plant cannot be seen, thus “Not Seen” – ‘Nutscene‘.

Continued tradition

Today, Nutscene® is located a short drive away from the city of Dundee, in the rural county of Angus. Still using the original machinery first used by them back in 1922, Nutscene® still produces its own range of high quality garden twines and employs local people to do so.

Biodegradable

The eclectic range of practical products utilises natural materials wherever possible, incorporating FSC wood, biodegradable jute and recycled cotton twines. No plastic here!

Ethical sustainability

All materials are ethically sourced materials. Sustainable crops are at the heart of the company, jute in particular is an environmentally beneficial crop. Rain fed, fast growing, flourishes on wastelands and improves the soil for future crops; it also reduces CO2.

I've only ever used one brand of garden twine and that's Nutscene®. Still made in Scotland to this day, the quality of the twine is consistently unbeatable in tensile strength and durability. Nutscene® is a quintessential part of our British gardening heritage and one which I implore everyone to support.
