Made for the heaviest harvests. Crafted for a lifetime

Handcrafted by artisan trug makers in a Herstmonceux workshop established in 1899, the Traditional Sussex Strapped Garden Trug is designed for gardeners who demand strength without compromising on craftsmanship. Available in two sizes, the strapped design replaces traditional feet with robust chestnut straps, allowing the trug to carry heavier harvests while making it easier to tip produce directly into sacks or wheelbarrows. Ideal for vegetables, fruit, flowers and larger gardening tasks.

Built for generations of hardworking gardeners, the Strapped Garden Trug is handmade in Sussex from sustainably coppiced English sweet chestnut and recycled cricket bat willow. The reinforced strapped base provides exceptional durability for heavier loads, while every trug is backed by a lifetime repair service. It's a true working basket, crafted to become a trusted companion season after season.

Every Traditional Sussex trug is handcrafted using locally sourced sweet chestnut and willow. Sweet chestnut poles are coppiced during winter before being split, seasoned, shaved, steamed and bent to create the handle and rim. The willow, often reclaimed from the cricket bat industry, is cut, shaved and soaked before being expertly woven into the frame. Finally, the chestnut straps are fitted in place of traditional feet, creating an exceptionally strong, lightweight trug built to withstand decades of everyday use.

Buy once. Treasure forever

Crafted for lifetime in the garden, not just for a season

A Traditional Sussex Trug is more than a garden basket, it's a piece of British artisanship. Handcrafted in Sussex from sustainably sourced English sweet chestnut and willow, each trug is built to last for generations and backed by a lifetime repair service. While cheaper alternatives may save money upfront, a genuine Sussex Trug offers lasting quality, timeless design and a heritage that's impossible to replicate.

The Sussex Trug

Makers of the traditional Sussex trug since 1899

British craftmanship

Every Sussex Trug is handcrafted by skilled artisan trug makers in a historic Herstmonceux workshop established in 1899. Using traditional techniques passed down through generations, each trug is individually made rather than mass produced, resulting in a beautifully finished basket that reflects over a century of British craftsmanship and heritage.

Sustainably Made. Built to Last

Crafted from sustainably coppiced English sweet chestnut and recycled cricket bat willow, every trug is made with longevity in mind. The natural materials provide exceptional strength while supporting sustainable woodland management and reducing waste. Backed by a lifetime repair service, these are heirloom-quality baskets designed to be repaired, reused and enjoyed for generations.

Designed for Everyday Use

Lightweight, durable and remarkably versatile, Sussex Trugs are made to work as hard as you do. Whether you're harvesting vegetables, carrying flowers, collecting produce, transporting tools or creating beautiful home displays, their timeless design combines practical functionality with effortless style. From garden to greenhouse to kitchen, a Sussex Trug is a trusted companion for every season.

A word from the expert

The trug I trust

When there's a bigger job to tackle, this is the trug I reach for. The strapped base makes it incredibly strong without adding unnecessary weight, so it's perfect for harvesting vegetables, moving pots or carrying heavier loads around the garden. It's beautifully made, practical in every sense, and represents everything I love about traditional British craftsmanship—simple, honest and built to last.
